On Tuesday this week our class went on a walk around the lake, but it wasn't an ordinary walk, it was a first aid training challenge! At the start of the day Nic split us into groups. We then walked up to the Velinski track where the first challenge took place. Kaelyn had to act as though she had hypothermia and her group had to remember the first aid training we had the day before to save her in time. We continued this througout the day where specific people would have medical accidents at random points in our trip. We walked down to the beach by the Arnold river and made shelters with tarps. Alice tested how waterproof they were by tipping buckets of water on them. Mackenzie was the only one our group that got wet. At the end of the day we made fires and had smores.

Water topic
Today, we had a visit from a worker at niwa, Mike. He showed us how he measures the level and temperature of the lake and sends the results to labs to be tested. afterwords, we went to a more swampy part of the lake to find critters that live in those environments.
Here are some photos of our discoveries:

Story trailer
This term we have been learning about earthquakes, Tsunamis and Rocks. We live very near to the alpine fault in NZ and there has been a large earthquake overdue for years. Our class has been going on a tsunami walk every week in case of the threat. I have bundled up all of this information and put it in my narrative I have been writing, called Don't count your students. here is a sneak-peak of the story; It was an ordinary, boring day at school. Our teacher Nic was droning on about sentence work as my friends and I sat, slumped into our seats, around our orange, star shaped table. Kaelyn was trying to put her hat in her pencil case. Zoe was eating her shoe. Krystal was... well just Krystal. Mackenzie was picking her nose with her pencil and - RUMMBLEE! A giant, deep, roar echoed through the school, waking us out of our boredom.
